Ko'olau Mountains
On rainy days, from an altitude of 2,600 feet above
sea level, the majestic Ko'olau Mountains produce a spectacular show of seven rushing
waterfalls that feed into natural streams and riverbeds.Pili Grass
Senator Fong's Plantation and Garden preserves one of the few
remaining hillsides still covered in pili grass. It is a native grass growing to
over four feet in height. In ancient times, this light tan grass was used to thatch
houses and in making hula skirts.
Wild Orchid
Delicate wild purple orchids can be found throughout the Gardens,
their tiny seeds scattered by the trade winds. An odd feature from most orchids, the
wild orchid seed pods when dry, turn into tiny pinwheels that children often play
with as blow toys. |
