Hawaiian
Gardens
A grove of sandalwood
trees highlight the area. Sandalwood forests were common in
old Hawaii, but during the 1800s, their wood, prized throughout the
world for its sweet, light fragrance, was deforested to near extinction.
100 sandalwood trees were given to Senator Fong to preserve.
Lily
Ponds
Senator Fong's Plantation holds 7 ponds fed by mountain
streams. Hyacinths and multicolored water lilies cast murky
shadows where prawns, catfish, golden perch, and mountain guppies
hide below in the cool waters.
Lei
Flower Garden
The plumerias, crown flowers, and orchids found in
Nixon Valley are picked daily for lei
making classes held at the VISITOR CENTER. Over 60,000 flowers are used each week. Puakenikeni, jade flower, pikake, and bougainvillea that can be seen here are also popular for making leis. |
